Used by writers in 1970s New York to accentuate a piece and show skill level in using spray paint. Often these charcters were sampled from the mass media (comics, TV, advertsing) and reinterpreted to reflect the writer or their views.
Many writers have since developed their own charcters and style which often replace the piece in their artistic output. Most notably popularised by writer MODE2
